Hey guys! Jessica here from The Hook Nook! I am so excited to be here today on the Our Maker Life blog! I’ve been following along with OML since it’s launch and it’s just so amazing to connect with such amazing people! These makers are literal gems and are doing such amazing things. So grateful to be here!!
Today I wanted to share a bit of how I wear my makes! Though I don’t wear my makes EVERYday, I still love to pull them out, especially for dressier occasions! Whether I’m sporting a cowl, cardigan or beanie, it is always just so amazing to be able to have a whole garment rack of pieces to choose from! I know many Makers love to make items to share with others either as gifts or selling them at markets or online to customers, but I’m a selfish Maker (#noshame). The thing with being a crochet designer is I (obviously) have to work up a sample so I can write the pattern (I’ve seen some people write the pattern BEFORE creating the sample, and I have to admit, I’m not nearly as cool as these people, ha!) and I love to make women’s items so my sample stash is pretty intense and amazing.
Depending on mood, the weather, occasion, or even whether I shaved my armpits or not all determine which piece gets to be worn and when. Let me show you some of my favorite pieces and how I like to wear them!
As we are entering these warmer months, my cotton pieces are definitely my first choices to wear lately! The image above showcases my Easy Breezy Summer Cardi, which I made using Bernat Handicraft cotton yarn. Though I don’t typically wear bras as shirts outside of a photo shoot (hahahahah), this is still such a great piece to wear when I want some handmade love while being out and about, without getting too warm.
I love to pair my lightweight cardis and vests with pants, shorts, dresses, tank tops, long sleeves.. Ok, ok.. Maybe it’s just a staple in my closet - and that’s totally fine with me! Ha! These types of garments are my absolute favorite to make as well as wear, so I find any reason to use them!
Crop Top Life
On the warm weather topic, crop tops are just so fun! Again, I’m a bit more modest in my everyday life and wouldn’t typically wear this outfit to the grocery store or elementary school pick up, but it sure is fun for a girls night outfit, isn’t it?!
With a modest design on the front and an exposed back, paired with some high-waisted leather leggings.. this is just the outfit of my Las Vegas dreams. For a more day-to-day outfit, I like to wear my crop tops with high-waisted black, distressed jeans and a flattering jacket.
Now this outfit is MUCH more in line with my daily style. I love feeling dressed up and fancy. It really empowers me to feel like the girl boss I want to be (even if I still mostly work from home in my pajamas I’ve had for seventeen years..). On days that I’m able to dress up, you can usually find me wearing something black, something that has a unique feature (shirt with bell sleeves, embroidery designs, ties, etc) and a pair of awesome shoes. This outfit is something I have totally worn more than once. I’m so IN LOVE with the basic style of the dress with a simple cutout in the stomach area which offers that unique feel. Pairing it with my handmade Morgan Shrug made using my specially dyed yarn from Hello Stella… This is my FAVORITE outfit I own. Hands down. I’ve worn this outfit EVERYWHERE. Grocery shopping, school pick up, to the coffeehouse to work, and more. I just really love feeling pretty!
Another outfit I love to wear my Morgan Shrug with is a pair of rad, dark wash jeans (ahem, I usually mean black) and a form-fitting tank. With the oversized sleeves, I like to keep my clothes tighter and more basic to balance out the large and detailed sleeves.
For those cooler days, or even warmer days with a bit of wind, I am still rocking my black jeans (forever and always). For this particular outfit, I REALLY loved the embroidery design of this tee with the rolled sleeve (no, I didn’t make it - though I wish I could say that I did!) and the textured Penny Scarf. Also note the killer shoes.
When wearing things that have more detail or texture, I always think like to combine it with things that don’t have as much to catch the eye so all of the attention can be on the detailed piece. It’s all about balance, my friends!
Love Fest Fibers Tunic
Ok, ok.. We all love those days where we want to basically wear pajamas, but should probably wear real clothes (..maybe that’s just me?). I LOOOOVE my hugely oversized tunic (?) I made with Love Fest Fibers Pure Alpaca. This thing is like wearing the epitome of alpaca dreads. Because that’s exactly what this yarn is made of.. So cozy, warm and unique!
Pairing our “over-the-top” pieces with basic pieces helps dull down the “extra” factor so it could potentially pass as a reasonable everyday outfit. But heck, some days we just need those leather pants..
The Mulberry Shawl
Alright, let’s chat about another, more approachable, outfit. More often than not, this is probably the most “Jessica” outfit of the bunch - something I would wear any day of the week, no matter the occasion. There’s just something about an all black outfit with a pop of color. As mentioned, I love black clothing. I love how “put together” it looks, it’s edgy, and I still make it a bit more trendy and feminine by adding in some handmade goodies. This is my Mulberry Shawl which, in my opinion, is a MUST HAVE for the fall and winter season. I love that I can still wear my pajama shirts and hide them with this awesome thing covering it, along with a nice jacket.
The Mazie Cowl
Cowls… need I say more? Cowls are SO great for so many reasons. They are usually quick to work up, you can create detailed pieces (or use unique yarn) and still have it refrain from being intimidating, in terms of wearing it out on an average day.
This is my Mazie Cowl I made using Lion Brand WOW! Yarn which is such a fun texture! It really reminds me of Love Fest Fibers, but without the larger price tag. Though it isn’t the same fiber content, nor direct from an alpaca farm, it’s still a great product for those larger than life designs. Using neutral colors for your cowls, allows you to be able to wear them more often with your detailed or unique tops/jackets.
I’m sure you all can relate, but it’s SO much easier to make outfits using your makes during the cooler months, amirite?! Whether you are wearing handmade cardigans, sweaters, scarves, fingerless gloves, beanies, or even socks.. As a Maker, I always look forward to October, not only because it’s my birthday month, but also because that’s when I can usually create outfits with ALL of my makes.
Be sure to let us all know your favorite designs you love to wear! Is there something you are wanting to make for upcoming seasons? Do you have specific outfits you love to wear with certain makes? I want to know!!
Thank you so much for hearing a bit about my outfit-choosing-process (is that a thing?) here on the Our Maker Life blog. Can’t wait to see how you all wear your favorite projects!
**Note: Morgan Shrug and Love Fest Fibers tunic patterns are not available at this time. Morgan Shrug will be available sometime in 2018. Mazie Cowl pattern is available as a free download with the purchase of any Furls Crochet jumbo hook.
