Social media. Where the heck would we be without it?
I know I wouldn't have had the opportunity to connect with literally hundreds, even thousands of talented makers so quickly and easily. I couldn't interact with so many like minded individuals on a daily basis. The creative world would no longer be at the tips of my fingers. I know for certain Our Maker Life wouldn't exist, and what a sad, sad world that would be. Am I right?
Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, they all play such a pivotal role in the modern maker's creative life. It connects us, inspires us, promotes us, informs us, teaches us. We are lucky to live in a time that has such a powerful tool. So how does social media play a role in your creative life?
I've always been interested in connecting with others online. In high school I basically lived on MSN and Myspace (yeah, I was that cool). As a teenager I joined a small online forum where I made a lot of friendships and connections I still have today. Maybe I thrived in an online environment because I'm not exactly the most graceful person when it comes to "real life" social situations. I'm an awkward introvert who fumbles her words and blushes a lot and gets really sweaty under pressure.
As someone who has a hard time expressing themselves verbally, it's not surprising I turned to visuals and the written word as a form of communication. Social media, Instagram in particular, has become a storytelling tool for me. It's a way to share pieces of my creative life with the world, almost like a modern handmade diary. A way I can look back to see where I was, and how far I've come. A way to offer a glimpse of the person behind my handmade business in a safe, creative way.
The cherry on top of the social media cake, is I'm sharing my thoughts, projects, and insights with a community of makers who can appreciate what I have to offer. I can expect support and praise for my work, but also opinions and advice on how to improve myself. It doesn't really get much better than being accepted into a big, welcoming family of talented souls who love yarn and knitting and crocheting as much as I do. Many of these relationships have moved offline too. Social media for the win!

Kelly, OML dream team
Kelly is the mind, body and soul behind @knitbrooks: handmade modern knitwear inspired by nature’s endless beauty. After completing a photojournalism program, Kelly used both knitting and crocheting as a way to relax after a long day working as a reporter/photographer. This hobby has since transformed into a way to combine her love of creating fashionable knitwear, with her passion for photography, a cozy lifestyle, and her awe and admiration of the untouched wilderness.
