Jewell here, teaming up with Kelly on this week's QOTW.
I will always remember learning how to cast on my first 40 knit stitches in college (in hopes to get over depression and anxiety from a breakup), and then speeding to the local craft store shortly after to grab my very own yarn skein, needles and a free pattern to make my very first scarf. It was green and ugly and I gifted it for my mother (who thank goodness wore it in proud adoration), but in making it, I began a love affair all my own with knitting. I discovered a spiritual peace like I had never known. I felt close to God, as if I could dedicate all the time in the world to pursue scriptural study, to simply sit back and enjoy a good cup of coffee in the silence. I could dream and monotask and live slowly - and I love that to this very day knitting has continuously allowed that for me. That same peace is why a few years after teaching myself how to knit, I taught myself how to crochet. It's why I opened my etsy knitwear shop NorthKnits. It's why I began Our Maker Life because I believe so many of us seek that sense of peace and passion and wholesome goodness, particularly through knitting and crochet.
I know that Kelly sought wholesome goodness and the beauty of nature as she simaltaneously snapped the world in pictures as a photojournalist. That journey and her discoveries and being inspired by other makers is what led her to launch her own knitwear shop, Knitbrooks. And to this day, knitting and crochet allows Kelly to seek and find inspiration in the beauty of wilderness and I know that OML would not be the greatness that it is without her.
But I know that we all have our stories and passions and pursuits behind our knitting and crochet. And Kelly asked a few of you just that: when and why did you start knitting and crocheting?
Here's what Ann of Patty Cake Crochet, Erika of LoareKnits, Jenny Mijango, and Erika of PurlBlossom had to say about their knit and crochet roots.
When and why did you start knitting and/or crochet? Tell us in the comments below, or tag us with #ourmakerlife on our @ourmakerlife IG with a cool pic for a chance to be featured on our feed!
If you have a question in mind you would like to see answered by fellow makers, just send us a quick 'OML QOTW' email - we'd love to put together a QOTW with you.
Kelly and Jewell, OML dream team
Kelly is the mind, body and soul behind @knitbrooks: handmade modern knitwear inspired by nature’s endless beauty. After completing a photojournalism program, Kelly used both knitting and crocheting as a way to relax after a long day working as a reporter/photographer. This hobby has since transformed into a way to combine her love of creating fashionable knitwear, with her passion for photography, a cozy lifestyle, and her awe and admiration of the untouched wilderness
Jewell is the knitter behind @northknits handmade knitwear. After realizing the peaceful beauty in quiet knitting and bible study time, she took a leap of faith and opened her shop and blog to create cozy knit accessories and inspire others through prayer and self-reflection. Although she enjoys the fast-paced lifestyle as a Chicago-based video news producer and editor, it is knitting, crochet and creatively connecting with others where she has discovered a true calling and full heart.
